Both of these Korean powerhouses are known for their ability to innovate continuously. Home appliances space has been the same when it comes to innovation. When it comes to dishwashers, Samsung and LG are not known to have a broad selection like that of Miele, Bosch or even GE. However, with less than 10 products (excluding color combinations) in their catalog, they tend to offer good quality dishwashers that reinforce their whole kitchen appliances suite so that customers can have a great deal along with matching look and feel.

1) Quiet Operation

Back in the day, we seemed to plan our lives around the dishwasher cycle. The noise could be annoying, especially if you had an open plan kitchen. These days, there is intense competition among brands like Samsung and LG to make the quietest dishwasher. And, wouldn’t you prefer a dishwasher you can use any time of day?

So, how do you know if a dishwasher is quiet enough?

A dishwasher’s noise level is measured in decibels (dB or dBA). For reference, a quiet library is around 40 dB, a regular conversation is about 50 dB, and crowded restaurant chatter comes in close to 60 dB.

We consider dishwashers between 38-45 dB as super quiet. Still, anything under 49 dB isn’t bad, especially since the loudest parts of a cycle are also the shortest.

Samsung models operate at low noise levels between 38-50 dB, except for entry-level legacy model at 55 dB. Similarly, LG dishwashers stay under 48 dB. Their quietest dishwasher, the LG Signature LUDP8997SN, comes in almost as low as Samsung at 40dB.

2) Style and Design

When choosing a style, it’s important to make sure your dishwasher matches other appliances, cabinets, and the overall look of the room. Trends in interior décor have veered towards sleek and minimalist look. Fingerprint-proof façades with hidden control buttons now define the design of a modern dishwasher by Samsung and LG.

Samsung's designs are elegant. Their gorgeous, black stainless steel models look like a new convertible ready to roar. The blue LED light indicator is pleasing to the eye as well.

LG also offers attractive designs. Even the more economical models have flush handles with electronic touch controls. Like Samsung, LG comes in a variety of colors, including stainless steel, white, black, black stainless steel, and their latest release the "matte black stainless."

At this time, both Samsung and LG dishwashers do not offer specialy models such as panel ready dishwashers. Due to their limited selection 18-inch dishwashers, or ADA compliant dishwashers are not part of their lineup.

3) Cleaning and Drying Performance

Both manufacturers offer features expected of modern dishwashers. Samsung maintains simplicity on even its most advanced units with 7 cycles and 7 options (4 on basic models). LG, on the other hand, offers a few more options with up to 9 cycles and 8 options on all models.

For the entire product range, both Samsung and LG offer auto, normal, heavy, and express cycles. Delicate and rinse only wash cycles can also be found on most models.

Unique Features of Samsung Dishwashers

We covered Samsung dishwashers in our in-depth review earlier in the year. Here we would like to highlight the more salient, differentiating features.

• WaterWall: Make sure you never miss a spot. WaterWall cleans your dishes with a blast of water from one side of the tub to the other.

• StormWash: Most entry-level dishwashers are made for Samsung by a Chinese conglomerate called Midea Group). These dishwashers do not feature the "WaterWall" technology. Instead, Samsung figured out a good way to wash super dirty pots, pans, and dishes. "StormWash" which is a special nozzle on the back left side provides a powerful wash that even the toughest dirt can’t stand up to.

• Zone Booster: Reserved for the models with WaterWall technology, Zone Booster is a cleaning area on the lower rack with extra nozzles to target especially dirty dishes. This area is clearly marked in red.

• Auto Release Door for Enhanced Drying: This feature is an everyday lifesaver found only on the Samsung dishwashers model DW80K7050US and up.

Start the cycle before bed and find your dishes clean and dry in the morning. The door will automatically open ajar to avoid mustiness.

Unique Features of LG Dishwasher models:

LG uses the relatively small size of their dishwasher selection to the advantage of the users. As we covered in our in-depth review of LG dishwashers the most essential cleaning features are shared across the catalog without the usual gimmicks of an artificial upgrade path for extra Dollars.

• TrueSteam: Instead of pre-rinsing dishes run them through the steam cycle. Steam process is shorter than a rinse cycle and far more effective. Concentrated steam will soak food stains and melt them away from dishes. Save time and energy!

• QuadWash: Four multi-motion spray arms, complete with spray jets, rotate back and forth during the wash cycle to ensure that dishes are spotless.

• DualZone: Uses different spray intensities for both the upper (soft) and lower (strong) racks. This means that you can wash heavily soiled pots and pans on the bottom rack and more delicate items on top. If you plan to wash your delicate glassware in an LG Dishwasher, this is the program to go with.

Other Notable Features of Samsung and LG Dishwashers

LG dishwashers have NFC-Tag Technology, which lets you download new custom-cycles on your smartphone app and then associate them with your machine by holding your phone next to your dishwasher.

SmartThinQ / SmartDiagnosis Mid-range and high-end dishwashers include LG’s SmartThinQ technology, which sends an alert to your phone when your dishwasher cycle has finished. You can add additional convenience by combining this technology with Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa.

When something goes wrong, it can be challenging to troubleshoot alone. With SmartDiagnosis technology, your dishwasher can diagnose its own problems and communicate them to LG’s customer service. This can help you quickly resolve any issue.

You can expect to have a 5-7 year longevity with Samsung or LG dishwashers. Compared to their German competitors this tends to be on the lower end of the spectrum for durability. However, it is consistent with that of North American competitors.

Samsung Dishwasher Pricing

• Low Budget Models for under $450 - DW80M2020US or DW80J3020US feature low price points yet a modern fit and finish. However, with quietness rating over 50 dB they are considered loud dishwashers.

• In the $550-650 band you have great options on dishwashers with StormWash DW80K5050US and DW80K7050US

• Real Samsung technology comes into play on models over $700. Waterwall, Super silent operation 38-42 dB and many other features can be found on this range. DW80M9550US and DW80M9960US

LG Dishwasher Pricing

• LG dishwashers range from $595 to $995 before seasonal promotions. All LG's share the same core technologies such as TrueSteam and QuadWash. What seems to change the price among the ranks is the silence rating.

• The CES 2017 Award-winning LG Signature Series LUDP8997SN is at $1525 at 40 dB. Kind of a steep price to pay for an LG.

Both Samsung and LG make affordable dishwashers that perform above average. We are most impressed by their outer design and especially the "Black Stainless Steel" selection.

Samsung differentiates itself in the market with their ultra quiet operation and the auto-release door which aids in drying. Whereas LG's TrueSteam feature is impressive.

It makes sense to consider one of these brands in a kitchen package due to their strong sales incentives for customers during promotional seasons. However, when replacing an old dishwasher, we still think that there may be other choices in the market from Bosch and Miele dishwashers that might outperform these brands in the category.
